Pumped Up About Blood Pima Medical Institute Students In Las Vegas Roll Up Sleeves For Blood Drive
Las Vegas, NV June 16, 2004 -- The students and staff at Pima Medical Institute, 3333 E. Flamingo Road in Las Vegas are pumped up about blood and want to help. The mobile van for United Blood Services will be parked at the campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 7.
Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh 110 pounds, be in good health and not have donated blood in the past eight weeks. Donors will need to show a photo I.D. Tours of the campus will be available for those interested in learning more about PMI's programs and refreshments will be served.
"As future healthcare practitioners, our students understand the importance of blood donations and want to help," said Babbette Burcaw, campus director for the Las Vegas school. "The national average for regular blood donors is 6 %, but only 2 % of Las Vegas residents currently donate blood. We want to see that figure increase substantially."
Little known facts about blood include:
80,000 pints of blood are used each year in Las Vegas (about nine units an hour).
An estimated 85% of us will require blood before the age of 75.
One pint of blood can save up to three different people's lives.
The average car accident trauma uses about 50 units of blood.
There is no substitute for human blood.
In addition to Phlebotomy Technician training, PMI's Las Vegas campus has programs for: Dental Assistant; Medical Assistant; Medical Secretary; Veterinary Assistant and Radiography.
PMI is one of the premier medical vocational institutes in the western United States. The privately owned, accredited school provides students with a well-rounded education embracing theoretical classroom studies, as well as on-site training at medical facilities that mirror the working environment they will pursue after graduation.
PMI has been serving students since 1972, with campuses in: Albuquerque, NM; Chula Vista, CA; Colorado Springs and Denver, CO; Seattle, WA; Mesa and Tucson, AZ; as well as the Las Vegas campus. Additional information is available by calling 1-888-442-5998 or at http://www.pmi.edu.
